After reading the post about the average age of welders in the US is 55. Thought I take a straw poll of Members on UKWelder to try and see what the average age is in the UK. Any guesses?

Take that figure with a grain of salt.
You need to understand what/who is being classified a "welder". I don't have any great knowledge of who came up with that statistic or how they did it but I can say this: a huge number of people who make their living welding, and in my opinion the highest quality welders in this country generally fall into statistics under different terms.
that is, the vast majority of people who weld pipe in the U.S. are part of the trade known here as "Pipefitters" or "Steamfitters", some will be "Boilermakers", some will be "Pipeliners". Those that weld structural type materials will be classified as "Ironworkers" or "Millwrights" or "Pile Drivers" ect.
It seems to me that statistics that use the term "welder" are usually looking at manufacturing plants and the like.
And when they talk to some guy saying in the media "we just can't get enought welders here at Cheap Skate Manufacturing Co." you can be assured that they are paying junk wages, and attracting junk welders. The jobs that are paying right, are being fully manned, those that want great welders at rock bottom prices are whining about a shortage. There is a shortage, a shortage of men willing to work for sub standard pay. That's the way it should be.
