Sparky

The figures Focal Size 0.75 to 2.50 etc refer to the Right and Left Eye and distance in sphere and cylinder clinical data which are measured when you have an eye test at the opticians. I have 1.25 measurements for both eyes. Arrange for an eye test and you'll get the figures explained and then you can purchase the correct cheater lenses. Hope this helps.

Sparkyone,
I was just going to put up a post regards this one, getting sick of forgetting to put reading glasses on prior to welding then swapping reading glasses for safety glasses, then sunnies for brazing. Drives me mad, how many things are there to 'lose' in the workplace. I have also seen safety glasses for sale like this, should make life a bit less tense. a bit less of the old 'WHO'S HAD MY GLASSES AGAIN' even though there is nobody else in my workshop.

So are cheater lenses any good?

be carefull as your eye's may be slightly different once you have had your eye test it will tell you the strength of each eye if they both the same use relevant cheater glass.
If they are different get GLASSES as cheaters ony come in specific types both eye's the same And you will do more damage to your eye's than you can even think of .....

Yes, I bought a cheater lens from this site. I looked at my last eye test results and both my eyes are similar. I only need the lens for TIG and it scares the hell out of anybody else trying to use my screen! The only downside is a very limited focal length, so not much help for tuition or tricky positional welds. W/A

I have a significant difference between my eyes and a cheater in one power won't work for me.

if you buy the glass cheaters, as opposed to the one piece plastic ones (the glass ones are better quality overall) you can use two different power lenses in one plastic frame. You have to cut a bit of plastic away to remove and replace the one lens but it's worked very well for me.

There is an optical company in the U.S. that grinds cheaters to your prescription, and in powers higher than those available off the shelf.

Hello People, new to the forum here and have read loads of good stuff so far, am at THAT stage where I am at #9 on my auto lens shade for mig work and still find things fuzzy, so just bought a 2.25 cheater lens as it's a real PITA trying to weld wearing vari focals, just wondered if anyone new how the lens is fitted in a speedglas shield....? unsure.gif would it be better in front of the lens behind the clear lens protector or at the back of the lens inside the shield...? also how are they held in place, cheers all..

mig 29,
It is a device for longsighted od giffers like me who's eyes are failing and cant focus close up like they used too. it goes inside your welding helmet to save faffing about with trying to wear reading glasses inside it, a royal pain in the sit upon.
I am still debating whether to put up with the hassle or try one.

I find a helmet liner like from here http://www.ukwelder.com/shop/helmets/winte...lmet_liners.php keeps my glasses in place, and being a natural skinhead, it adds some none slip properties to the helmet band too laugh.gif The cheater lens is no use if you need to frequently remove your helmet or flip the lens, since you then need to flaff around and put on your glasses, if you remember where you put them. Some helmets have clips built in for the lenses, others you'd have to cobble up something with a couple of small screws/whatever. But, the lenses are cheaper than glasses.

Best wishes,
Ray

hi chaps.
I ordered mine today off our rep. speedglas do them for the 9000 and 9002 series. I ordered the x1.5 and x2 lense. Apparantly they fit in front of the auto lense and behind the front protector cover so they can't get scratched. very cheap aswell

Speedglas say for their helmets the magnifying lens should be placed between
the welding filter and its outside protective plate.

Looking into all this myself... after 25+ years as a fitter in the US, moved to continental Europe, and seems they don't hire "just" fitters... must have welding certs also - so this old dog is taking a TIG class...
