A gas lense and minimum 8 ceramic with 12-14lpm 40-45 amps and gallop along, make sure your purge is good and reduce purge flow as the gap closes. Pulse is ideal if you cant get the balance between heat and filler (cooling) right. Four inch a breeze, 2 inch my old wrists struggle and I have to drop the power.

I agree we you regarding ceramic size, nothing smaller than an 8 shroud, gives you better
Argon cover.
Read the weld spec for your heat input.
Don't just take someones advice from off here.
Try changing your gas,
Is the gas lense the type with gauze on front or copper lense with holes in the sides.
If its the lense with holes in side change it for the gauze type.
Try putting a gas lense on end of your purge pipe, tends to give a more stable flow of gas.

Thought the question was with regard to a set up that would help with the stated problem.........

Not all welders work with the benefit of a set welding parameters. If the guy is on that sort of work (coded), would he be asking this type of question.....

Some are just given two pieces of metal and asked to join them (crikey blimey), there would be an awful lot of broken machines in my wake if I had insisted on having a weld procedure before working.
Even more if I had not gotten help from the guys on here.

You describe a standard diffuser (holes) a lense, is the gauze type.
