i normaly go to materials engineering group derby but to be honest these places charge £150 quid a day just to use there facilities and then the bsen or asme test piece that goes for radiography is another £150 per pipe, best thing to do is get some 6" -168 mm od pipe 12mm wall thickness 55 degree prep a pack of filarc 56s 2.5 and 3.2 and start practicing in the 6g position ,then when youve got total root fusion with seamless stop starts ,clean fill and no undercut at all on the cap then go for a day at a test centre. save a fortune..

Offshore welder,
The only code I have heard of that does not allow mechanical tools on the weld test is AWS D1.5 (American bridge building code).
However, the client / owner can impose any requirements they want over and above the code requirements so if they say no grinding, no grinding it is.
(Just reread your post and no it is not a requirement if you are just doing an ASME IX or BS/EN 287 at some testing agency)
Regards,
BB
