FINALLY i've got my head in the door for a couple of weeks work.........

After having a quick look round i was surprised at how many welding/fabby outfits there actually are down there in the area i've been, welding is going off all over the place.
What i still find strange is why the work has not been advertised apart from the very rarely spotted "welder wanted" advert.
This project has been on the go for two years so my questions are this:Who else on this forum is down there?,and why has the work/vacancies been so secretive?.

P.s the outfit who called me over the weekend said they had eight welders going down, today there were five of us so i'll ask a few questions and post any news.

The simple reason is they employed foreign labour because it is cheaper and they wont take any sort of industrial action no matter what conditions they are are made to work under...My mate went on the site for 1 day and in a pipe shop for a day he said the only brits he spoke to were the gaffers..

i`m about 35 miles, as the crow flies, from the site. a very easy journey though. i was told they was only taking on labour from a 15 mile radius

I have never worked on a site like the Olympics before.....
I've tried talking to people down there and not one will say if there's work going,i've asked if they know other outfits and you just get the blank stare!!!!....
Yesterday i actually called a companies office and got told-no we are not on the site, strange say's me cos i've just called the number off the van that's right next to me and the lads out of it are there bloody welding........
Talk about secrecy,i could find Lord Lucan easier than finding graft down there...

But anyway i've tried to find myself more graft and hoped i'd get some graft for other forum users but i can honestly say i'm sick of trying........

A week of trying and i give up..............

Hi All!

ratcatcher, I find your thread about the Olympics venue very disturbing! I remember back when Wembley was being rebuilt and many, many tradesmen were boasting, as they do about mega money etc. But at least there were men in work!

I can honestly state that I know not one person who is working on this Olympic project!? With Wembley, I knew at least a couple of dozen or so! What has changed? No way can a project of this size hope to meet skill demand from a 15 mile radius, as robbie691 states, so I would have thought many lad's would be working on this project from far as is normal on a job of this size!

Regards

did know of some people on the wembly project, but as rod has stated, i know of no one on the olympics. not just meaning welders, have friends in other trades and they don`t know of anyone on the olympic project.

Well as of today i've one week left then back seeing those lovely peeps at the rock n roll, but it's the same with the other lads i'm working with....
We were in Saturday morning and just chatting amongst ourselves and it turns out that one lads missus and son are on the site asking questions and can't get answers..

But atleast i found out that the job i'm on was actually built in Australia and shipped here, the deck plates for it are apparently from Germany.
This fits in with my chat to a steel stockholder earlier this year, they were shipping steel from Yorkshire to the Continent which was destined for the Olympics.

I can still remember a time when the British welding/plating side used to be specialists throughout the world and now in the main can't get a look in even in our own country.
But hey atleast out of the stated 10,000 workers on the Olympics the Brits are a serious minority and i don't care what their figures say,i'm down there and i'm not blind or deaf!.

It's a seriously depressing place knowing the size of the site and knowing the amount of work there is still down there, and i'm not even gonna get started on the Westfield site next door because the mods wouldn't print my answer.

P.S: R.O.G, As for the Wembley site i was actually asked to go and see them regarding work but at the time i was tied up,it would have been a nice project to work on!.

P.P.S: I've worked with a fair few lads whilst down here and never seen them again, the one's i do keep in touch with are the old timers whether they be burners, welders or platers and we're all agreed that they should be screaming out for steel workers but at the minute most are out of work!.

P.P.P.S: G.T.G,Thank's for sticking that ad on but i've had dealings with them in the past, been the usual can you start tomorrow but we need a cv and never another word from them.
When i've called them the answers been-jobs been cancelled.

P.P.P.P.S:The future of this industry is looking bleaker by the day!.

My nephew from bedford was on the stratford site for around two months, as a steelfixer, he said the amount of foreign labour was incredible. I also priced for the four km of underground ten inch pipes, and never even got a response! i believe the company involved were just using my, and others, prices to formulate their own! Good luck ratty, i think we are all going to need it! Ged

Two weeks later and still there, don't ask me how because i seriously don't know......Might be that the sites on time and under budget-Mr Johnson said so on the telly last night...
I don't think i'll give a response apart from your tax might well be going up a few extra quid in 2013.

Any way i've found out that the Westfield site are now looking for coded welders of all persuasions,i'll post the details when they come through but it's around the £20 mark and they will be looking for more down the line.....

They are having a registration day next Friday 8th if anyone is interested.Don't know who the main contractor is but i'm trying to find out.
Also whilst chatting there is work coming off on the main Olympic site in the near future so might be worth contacting them.
I've finished down there today but aint got my own codes so at the minute my options are limited.

The contractor is gathering together a team of welders with various experiences (mig, tig, arc, mma etc) for a series of contracts due to start at the beginning of August at the prestigious Westfield Construction project in Stratford London.

I am aware that some of the work is nights which would be 6pm to 6am and is approximately £20/21 per hour.

Could you please bring your certificates, proof of certification, passport details, CSCS cards, and CV if you have one on the day.

Also the amount of foreign faces is dwindling,a lot of Irish and Midlands outfits started.
