Can you weld vertical down with metal core wire ,gaffer says yes,but I would use solid wire as not sure about strength etc

Some you can....you need to read the Manufacturers Data Sheet or ask them

In my experience, you can weld vertical down with metal cored wire. It is similar to solid wire in that you are in dip transfer. The advantage is there is less chance of getting lack of fusion defects compared to solid wire. Have ran WOQRs using metal cored in the root 1.2mm dia around 10pA 17V, with a beautfil looking root. Tested to - 46C Impacts, no problem. Would normally fill with Rutile Flux Cored in position.
