Hello to all, haven't been on for what seems like years but could use some advice.
Recently got involved in plant repair/concrete crushers/quarry plant etc. Been self employed fabricator/welder for about 600 years and due to work being thin on ground had to branch out & got involved in plant repairs.
Been making replacement chutes, panels, hoppers etc & as always happens one thing has lead to another. Now being asked to do more welding repairs, here lies the question(s).
What electrodes recomended for Hardox 400 20mm thick plate welded to inner crusher hopper?
Same question for replacement blades/teeth on excavator buckets?

Using diesel gen-set (DC) on site.

Also hardface mig wire, should I be using 80/20 argon or was this something I dreamt?
Not using mag as much only when doing jobs in workshop (3phase).

Advice much appreciated.

Hope most of you are working, its proper tough out there.

Hi
I welded a lot of H400 and prefer to use Bohler Fox EV50, never had a problem with it yet. I been told you can weld H400 up to 50mm thick without a pre-heat but i always thought there is nothing wrong with warming it up a bit especially in the cold months. As for H600 we normally just use it for bolt-on wearplates due to the pre-heat and post cooling hassle when you weld it.

Hi Hardface, thanks for reply.

Someone I know mentioned Bohler EV50 sticks but he has a habit of talkin thro his exit hole. I will invest in a pack now they're recomended from a reliable source!

What rods would you recomend for bucket blades & would you multi run? Think I remember you posting something bout this a couple of years back?

As regards pre-heating plates, I always give it some aswell. School of thought being its gotta be better than starting stone cold. I'm not saying its right, but its a relief to know someone else thinks the same!

Again thanks for reply, the realm of knowledge on here is second to none.

Theres a new Hardox welding handbook
You will have to ask for it. It used to be on-line so I dont understand why they have done this.

Been on website & will e-mail to order latest edition, as previous issue has now been superceded.

Thanks again, as I said, second to none.

Hi Dazzle
Most blades or wear plates like dozer edges are bolted on so i dont really do too much of that stuff and when i do im lucky enough to get it inside and use mig.
One of the firms i do work for have a Demag faceshovel about the 140 ton mark, between the bucket teeth are shroulds that slot over the front edge to save the gum, the original part was held on with a clamp type setup but they found a source for weld-on ones at a fraction of the price, i have welded 4 of theese on now and all with E71T fluxcore wire multi-runs and they have not been a bit of bother, no signs of cracks at all and they are on the front edge of bucket taking all the abuse there is. As for what rod to use, i think someone better qualified than me could give you that answer, try Al

Hi Hardface

Ye I started just blowing the old bolts out on bucket blades with the gas axe, but now being frequently asked to weld new ones on instead of using bolt on's. Hence my earlier question about rods as it suits customers for me to do it on site or at their yards.

Like I say, the plant gear is still relatively new to me so still learning. But to be honest the work is well interesting & its something I intend to stick with.

Thanks for your advice & input-cheers mate.
