Alright fellas i know this subject has been mentioned in the past but i cant find it anywhere in the archive. Ive been thinking about doing it for a while and its time to bite the bullet. Has anyone out there done this course and can give me any info on it? Ive spoken to a college about doing distance learning which sounds best for me apparently its 12 modules to complete on a semi flexible timescale. Ive only written a couple of esays in my short academic time so not really sure how im going to mange with it. Any info would be great.

Cheers lads SS

Hi Sidney,

Who is offering the HNC course that you are interested? I have been looking around for the past few days for a HNC or NVQ lvl4 course to do so I can eventually sign up for the TWI 'Technologist' Diploma. I am struggling to find anywhere to offer these courses (home study). So far I have located a possible for the NVQ and a possible for the HNC but have had no replies to my emails as of yet.

Any links or information from anyone would be appreciated. Cheers.

Sidney

Carniege College, Dunfirmline was the only college in the UK offering HNC in Fab, weld & Inspection by means of distance learning. Im currently doing the course but i believe they may have stopped the distance learning method of study. Best bet is to Google em and get in touch. Regards

Ive had the same problem with regards to lack of interest from the colleges but im told its because most of them are on their summer break. Teeside uni runs a distance learning course if you struggle to find anywhere.

Bushwacker
How have you found the course so far? Ive got little experience writing essays so im a bit worried about that. Also how long roughly does each unit take?

Thanks guys for the info.
I have now sent an email to Carniege College seeking information regarding the HNC distance learning courses.

Sidney, have you had any information from Teeside Uni? I have recieved an email from them with details of the courses they offer and a pricelist. Would you like me to send you the info if you havn't recieved it already?
The HNC courses they have offered me are :
*Mechanical Engineering (not quite welding and fab, but the closest to it which has been offered to me)
*Electrical and Electronic Engineering
*Instrumentation and Control Engineering
*Chemical Engineering

It seems that they dont specifically do a welding and fabrication course. If you know any different, please let me know.

Hi,
Check out the Adam Smith college in Kirkcaldy, they run the HNC fab/weld/NDT distance learning. Plus the NDT modules are the same training as the PCN and you get to sit the PCN exam at the end of the module if you want.
Cheers,
Mick

Have had no reply from Adam Smith College yet.
Carniege College have replied saying that they still do the Welding and Fab course for distance learning. Looks like this may be the one I sign up with. My email has been passed on to the tutor and I am now waiting for a reply from him with more details.

Very interested in this topic, im also keen to do this course and living in the south west distance learning would suit me also. Do you guys have any more details on how distance learning works? eg. how long it would take to complete the course etc?
cheers

BMX... From what I have read about distance learning you can study at your own pace at your leisure. However, I wouldnt be surprised if they put a cap on it giving you 3 years or so to complete it. I dont know this as fact though.

Also, where in the SouthWest are you? Im located in sunny Weymouth.

Any help would be great if its possible im based in the north east. Northumberland to be exact.

Im unsure of the duration of the course i think its fairly flexible depending on how long it takes the individual to complete the module. Ten or twelve modules i think to gain the qualification.

Hey all,

Sent Carnegie an email yesterday and they got back today replying that each module cost £87! They said if you apply online you will then have a one on one interview with a tutor!

Tiggy im based in not so sunny Exeter at the moment :S !!

£87 seems a bit cheap to me. I would have thought more like £300 per module. I can find the HNC Welding on their website through their course filtering system, but I cannot find it as distance learning. The description suggests attending their workshops. I think I will wait for a direct email from the tutor as Im not sure what Im signing up for on their website. If someone manages to find the correct course and description on the website, please post me a link.
Cheers.

Latest news : I phoned Carnegie College and was informed that the tutors are on holiday until August, therefore the tutors may not check their emails on a regular basis. I managed to get the tutors direct email and will personally send him an email if I havnt heard anything within the next couple of days. I cant help it, I am very eager to get started on this course sad.gif

Ive found the course ok so far. Each Unit will take approximatly 40 hrs of study but this is only a guide. The hardest thing ive found is managing your time correctly. If you can designate 6 hrs of your time per week they say it will take approximatly 2 years. If your from the right background and apply yourself correctly you should have no problem. I started October 09 and have corrently completed 4 units.
Good luck

SS & TD

It takes 12 units to complete the HNC. At the end of each unit you have an assessment. Upon completion of the 12 units you are required to sit a final exam.Which basically consists of what you have covered in your previous 12 unit assessments.
If you live in Scotland it costs £87 per unit. If you live outside of scotland its £250 per unit.
I scoured the internet many times to find this course and to my knowledge its the only college doing it by distance learning in the UK.

Good Luck
