Fri 03 Jul 22.32 A Fire Next to Solvent Tanks, help please Hi, I have been asked to look at 6 in number solvent tanks at a factory thats has just had a major fire, the tank tops seem to have distorted due to the heat, even though the firemen were cooling the tanks with water for the 2 days of the fire, the insurance company want these tanks to be reused on another site, but I am unhappy with this, is there anyway the heat of the fire could have affected the welds on these tanks? the heat was very intense and within 5m of the tanks there is the remains .... 5 ERD Thank you guys, your coments have been of a great help, I now feel happier with my gut feeling

Fri 03 Jul 18.01 AC MIG Hi All,Has anyone tried the DW300 machine from OTC ?CheersBW 8 boltonwelder Thanks for your replies, mdrd2006, which robot was it, have used OTC with their own robots also Motoman, Fanuc and Nachi ( it's the same robot ) without real issues ? Maybe analogue connections instead of digital ?We had similar problems interfacing Fronius to some Comau robots a few years ago, both good kit alone, interfacing is always the problem.Haven't used the Wise Thin but agree about Lincoln STT.CheersBW
Fri 03 Jul 15.33 5mm Aliminium MIG Im looking for basic set up tips for MIG welding aluminium 2.2mm to 5mm plate. (tee joint - fillet weld)The Ally spec is EN485-2 5083 H24, and the wire supplied to us is 1.2mm dia 5% silicon.Basically it is a prototype car bumper which is to be crash tested. We have to try and mirror how it is being made in production where possible, and because of the crash testing structurally there can be no pre-heat (would 5mm to 2.2mm even need pre heat?)The welds will be tested after with dye pen and a .... 4 ST95 Used the double pulse today definitely seems the one! I went with the hot start aswell, I just need to suss out an ideal ratio and time. Seems a bit too hot at the minute.Using a standard cleaning solvent followed by wirebrush, and it seems to be producing a clean weld so cheers for your responseST95

Thu 02 Jul 23.41 Border thickness for TIG autogenous .... Could you please roughly estimate the border thickness for butt welding of steel, Stainless Steel, aluminium without filler metal, just by melting base metals with arc?Of course, to obtain sound and good welded joint in this way, and excluding alloys not recommended to be welded without filler metal (duplex, 6xxx alu series...).Regards to all! 1 douglas Of course we could, but then, it would usually be in order to supply a context within which the parameters of your questions lie. It's all about sharing you see.Least that's what my big brother told me!Best regards.Douglas.

Wed 01 Jul 08.52 probs with aluminium in 6g Hi, could anyone give me any advice on aluminium. I've just done my asme9 6g, all went well with xray and stuff apart from final route bend test. Gonna cost me another 700 quid and I'm not happy because I'm not sure what i did wrong. any advice would be greatly appreciated. If report needed PM me. It's not like I'm new to this, several of my welds have been bombed this week and all passed. ps i wasn't using insert, just normal route. I've got re-test a week on .... 6 roddie Frozenbeard,When welding aluminium, backing gas wouldn“t normally get used. It doesn“t have the same potential for oxidisation like Stainless. I“m only talking about my experience, there may be guys out there that say you can“t weld Ali without a backing gas, it“s all down to the procedure.Preheat would be around 150 degrees, a bit you high might think, but the high thermal conductivity of the ali takes the heat away from the weld area very quickly and while you might think the weld is looking ....
Wed 01 Jul 08.33 308 stainless steel Hi all, I have welded 308 stainless steel with 316L MMA rods because that was all I had. The welds look fine and its only for an engine exhaust, no tests etc required. I wonder just how important it is to weld 316 with 316 rods or 308 with 308 rods please? Many thanks, Bsmith (",). 3 boilermaker BsmithIncorrect alloy balance possibly resulting in preferential corrosion of weld area.

Tue 30 Jun 18.48 Problems with Tig equipment Yesterday I encountered a problem with my welder which has rendered it useless. It's a Thermal Arc (Thermadyne) 180 AC/DC.I'd been doing short welds on a section of a car chassis, and I went to start the next weld, got the HF start spark and then nothing. The gas was flowing, the display wasn't showing any fault codes, everything seemed to be as it should be nothing would make the arc actually start. After nothing had worked I went through all the modes, switching it in and out of .... 4 Ex-boilerrat have you tried it again it may hay only over heated and like me need a cooling down time regaurds ex-boilerrat

Sat 04 Jul 00.54 BP contractors going back to hourly rate GuysHearing through RMT/OILC that BP as from October the 1st are putting all contractors (Wood Gp, Salamis and Cape) back on to hourly rate. This will deduct the wages from about £20-£40 per day. BP started up the day rate method of payment and now to cut costs are asking the contractors to help by cutting the bears wages, all this so they can keep their profits in the millions or billions zone, absolutely disgraceful. This action is going against the OCA agreement which Apache don't adhere .... 2 3Rs It does look very strange, I am prepared to put my neck on the line with the next statement, The price of crude oil is going up in price, watch the price of fuel at the pumps its already creaping to the £1.00 in some areas of the country. I would say the offshore industry will be firing up again big style next year. When it does and your on an hour lay rate i think your going to be kicking your selfs for not taking the fight. I my self am in the RMT and the GMB. And remember its stickabilty ....

Thu 02 Jul 14.31 updating certs Hi all, just asked an employer to upate my cert (MMA 6G ASME9/EN287), the last 6 month stamp ran out on June 18th and after holding on to it for 3 weeks gave it back to me with todays date on it , does anyone know if this will be a problem. The original test was july 23rd 2008.P.s lets not get into a long winded debate about whether 3rd party certs should be allowed or not. Cheers 2 welder 123 Hi midlands mate certs are certainly ok as you can prove continuous welding for 12 months and have 2 valid stamps on it, as for 3rd party certs like any cert they are only good until your 1st X-ray Ha!
